Profile
Shelburne Museum, located in Shelburne, Vermont, is a unique and diverse institution that showcases an extensive collection of American art, history, and culture. Founded in 1947 by Electra Havemeyer Webb, the museum spans 45 acres and features 39 exhibition buildings, 25 of which are historic structures relocated to the museum grounds. This unconventional approach creates a village-like setting that allows visitors to explore and discover American ingenuity, creativity, and craftsmanship across four centuries.
The museum’s collection is remarkably varied, comprising over 150,000 objects that range from Impressionist paintings to folk art, quilts, textiles, decorative arts, furniture, and Americana. Visitors can admire works by renowned artists such as Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, and Edgar Degas alongside unique artifacts like duck decoys, carousel animals, and even a 220-foot steamboat called the Ticonderoga. This eclectic mix reflects Electra Webb’s vision of creating “an educational project, varied and alive” that celebrates a distinctly American aesthetic.
Shelburne Museum offers a year-round experience with its Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education, which hosts special exhibitions and educational programs. The museum grounds also feature beautifully landscaped gardens, including over 400 lilacs, a circular formal garden, and herb and heirloom vegetable gardens. With its diverse collections, historic buildings, and engaging exhibits, Shelburne Museum provides visitors a unique and immersive journey through American art, history, and material culture.
